2nd Annual Wounded Warriors Fall Bass Classic
Tuesday, 22 September 2009 12:33

Great Day had by all at the 2nd

Annual Wounded Warriors Fall Bass

Classic!

Written By Ken Kirk/ Photos by Ashley Griesmeyer

More than 40 boats showed up at Anna Point Marina on Lake Anna, to take out our Nations Heroes last Sunday to show them how much we appreciate what they have done. Service Members from Ft. Mead, MD, Walter Reed, Army Hospital and MCB Quantico, VA Showed up to participate in this event.

“After Months of preparation, It Is nice to see everyone show up,”said Ken Kirk, the tournament director for the event.

Every Warrior that showed up to the event received a Tackle Bag provided by Bustin Bass.com and it was filled with a nice tackle assortment box that was donated by Bass Pro Shops, Ashland, VA., as well as other goodies from various sponsors. A new Fishing rod was also provided along with shirts and hats.  Over $30,000 in Sponsorship was raised for this one event and all donations were put into a fund with the PVA- Outdoor Recreation Heritage Fund that will be helping provide administrative support for these events. PVA is a non- profit organization that has been helping veterans for some time now.

At 7:30am, Just after the Nations Colors were presented by the Orange County High School,  Jr. ROTC,  the teams blasted off from the marina in search of the biggest five Bass in the lake.  With the Warriors off, the work continued.  The Red Cross of Central VA, helped set up and serve the food that was provided by Wally’s Homemade Ice Cream out of Fredericksburg, VA.

A Kid’s fishing derby was conducted by Sharron Greismeyer while the anglers were out on the water.  Sharron and her husband, Bill drove from Ohio just to Volunteer for the event.  “My Husband and I made the prizes ourselves for the Kids.” Sharron explained.” We loved doing this for them.”

At 1:00pm the boats began to arrive back at the marina to weigh in their catch.  As Steve Camp of Fishers of Men National Tournament Trail weighed the bags in, it was clear how tough the fishing was.   Kevin Beasley (Orange) and Austin Henry (Frederick) headed up the teams from Orange and Frederick Counties Jr. BASS Anglers that assisted with the weigh in. As the winners were being determined, the warriors and their families dug in to the food and ice cream.

The Winners were brought on stage where they received their prizes. Some of the prizes included new Castaway fishing rods, as well as lures; rods socks, lure covers, and gift certificates. The top 20 received Hunting trips from Mattaponi Hunt Club out of Caroline County.  The first place team received a Hunting trip that they will go on together to LEEK Preserve in Pennsylvania.  LEEK Preserve provides outdoor opportunities for our nations veterans.

These kinds of events have a direct impact on the quality of life for our Warriors and their families. “With a bad economy, Companies are still willing to give for these events, we have Sponsors from all over the United States as well as local business that helped us out”, Kirk stated. “As long as we have Wounded Warriors there will be a need for communities to pull together and offer things to provide them with fellowship and fun in the outdoors.

David Allan and Dylan Wolanski took 1st place with a weight of 10.3 lbs.

Jeremy Ryan and Elizabeth Juarez came in 2nd with 9lbs even while Kenny Brown and Rodjean Thorman rounded out the top 3.

Truly a great time was had by all and everyone is looking forwarded to the next event.

Thanks to all of the sponsors that donated and thanks to all of the volunteers’ that worked hard to pull this off.  God Bless and I will see you at the next event.

Sincerely,

Ken Kirk  k2guideservice.com

Product Review and Report from Ken Kirk

Spinner Baits in the fall. Tactics and Brands

From K2. As you all know Spinner Baits are a everywhere and every company from Strike King to H&H has their line. Most of them very the blades, weights, heads, hooks, skirts and trailers but they are all pretty much the same in design. I Just found a new concept in spinner baits that I think will take it to a whole new level. Kevin Phelps of  www.BustinBass.com has a line of muti-wire Spinner Baits that shows his company is thinking out of the box. I fished with Kevin on the Potomac river the other day and took a beatin from the front of his 520 Ranger I might add. After fishing with Kevin and learning more about Bustin Bass and his lure design I see this company as one that will take the sport of bass fishing to the next level. We will be teaming up this fall to make some video with his baits on Lake Anna, VA. Try them out for yourself at www.BustinBass.com

Summertime Bass caught off a point using a BustinBass Weed Demon Lure!

Does It Get Any Better Than This?

We have been fishing a few times before, ok many times before!  I remember I would hold Nathan in my arms and cast out the line and he would reel it back in!!!  Nathan was pretty good back in the early days with a tiny top water lure on a spinning reel!!  The irradic movement seemed to always attract fish, but this day was a bit different, a bit different indeed.  Ok, this time he had his own fishing pole, not one of daddy's rods or reels!!!  That's right, he now has his own high tech Lighting McQueen two eyelet fishing pole with with a red and yellow reel and boy can he cast that rascal.  Don't get in his way, he can cast that rod and reel with the best of them and he has been honing his skills at home casting his bobber at the car, truck, boat or his little brother!!!  On this particular day, we had a few fish on at Meetre's pond, his first being a bass!  He casted, he reeled (one of the few hundred times) and finally a bass hit the lure!!!  Well lets say the lure was a tiny hook with a pretty plump worm and a bobber!  Just as the bass was being pulled into the shallow water, with one last jump, as they always seem to do, Mr. Bass said goodbye and back into the water he went!  A few casts later and his next fish was on, Daddy, Daddy, Daddy I caught one, I caught a fish (I had turned away for just a moment) and what a beauty it was!!!!   What a day!!!  My oldest son Nathan at 3 1/2 catching and landing his first fish!  How proud can a father be????!!!! Do you remember that first time you caught your first fish, if you do, you probably want to realize that feeling over and over again.  Each and every time it happens to me, it just never seems to get old!  As the years move forward Nathan probably wont remember that first exact fish he caught on his own, but thankfully we had the camera with us that day and we captured his first fish!  It will forever be held dear to my heart!  If you have that son or daughter or even if its that kid down the street, give that child a chance to experience what it feels like to catch a fish.  I think Woo Daves said it best, show me a kid who fishes and I will show you a kid who stays out of trouble!  Woo, don't be mad if I miss quoted ya, but I hope they get the drift.  My buddy Bob Moody over in Delaware also shows us the power of fishing with his company Reel Expectations (www.Reelexpectations.org) .  He mentors kids through fishing!  When the fish aren't biting you need to talk about something (he states) and that something could be about staying in school, avoiding drugs and violence or the opportunity to share the word!!  I look forward to many more of these days with both Nathan and Ryan and hope that you will do the same with your son or daughter or again with that child down the street that may not have the same opportunity as others!

PS.  Just wanted to let you know we practiced catch and realease and "sunny" was returned to the pond alive and well!

Fishin with My BustinBass Brothers!
Tuesday, 16 June 2009 22:16

We just returned from a great video/picture shoot in the great state of North Carolina at Lake Charles!  We wanted to give everyone a different perspective of how and where you can use our BustinBass Lures (note the jon boats)!  Mother nature tried to pull a fast one on us again with some weather changes and muddy runoff, but we were ready for her this time!  Mark seemed to be doing better than the rest of the team with a five pounder and some good solid fours and a bunch of threes!  We will let him hold the trophy until next time!  Be on the lookout for our new video that will be out shortly that includes some great bass video footage along with some interviews/questions and answers from the BustinBass Team!!
